Why you miss due dates on Canvas, and what actually helps

Missing a deadline rarely feels like a choice. The assignment was posted, you meant to do it, and then Thursday happened. Afterward it is tempting to file it under laziness, but the real cause is usually simpler: the due date was never in front of you at a moment you could act on it.

The three usual causes

The assignment was posted where you were not looking. Professors post work in modules, announcements, discussions, and sometimes a syllabus PDF from week one. The Canvas to-do list catches some of it. The rest is on you to find.

You saw it once and trusted your memory. Reading a due date on Monday does not put it in your head on Thursday. A deadline you saw a week ago and have not seen since is a deadline you are gambling on.

Everything was due at once. Midterm weeks stack four classes into three days. If you find out about the stack on the Monday it starts, there is no schedule left to fix it with.

• Look one week ahead, every day. A seven day view makes a pileup visible while there is still time to spread the work out. This is the single highest value habit on this list.
